What Turns Up in an Estate Cleanout

Furniture, housewares, and general household belongings are all standard in an estate cleanout container. Older homes often turn up items that need separate handling, though. New Hampshire’s NHDES bars TVs, computer monitors, any screen over 4 inches diagonal, and computer CPUs from ordinary landfill or incinerator disposal — common finds in a longtime family home. A newer NHDES rule, effective July 1, 2025, bans rechargeable lithium-ion batteries from the trash entirely, covering the kind of batteries found in old laptops, cordless tools, and small electronics that tend to surface during a full property sort — a punctured or crushed pack is a genuine fire risk in a collection truck. Route both categories through a certified recycler, Call2Recycle, a participating retailer, or a local transfer station. Permits and Placement

Most estate cleanout containers sit in the driveway, which needs no permit anywhere in our service area. If the property genuinely requires street placement, that’s a Board of Public Works matter inside Nashua under City Code Ch. 285, or that town’s own select board or public works department in our other New Hampshire and Massachusetts towns, since neither the New Hampshire counties nor Massachusetts counties have land-use permitting authority here.
